  • the spruce genus includes more than 40 species of the temperate and cold zone of the northern hemisphere
  • from a forestry point of view, an important genus divided into two sections:
  1. Eupicea - assimilation organs - The needles are square in cross-section (square to rhombic) with rows of vents on all sides, this section includes e.g.:
  • Picea abies (Norway spruce)
  • Picea pungens (Prickly spruce)
  • Picea engelmannii (Engelmann spruce)
  • Picea orientalis (Eastern spruce)
  • Picea glauca (White spruce)
  • Picea mariana (Black spruce)
  1. Omorica - assimilation organs - the needles are flat in cross-section (round - similar to white fir) and on the reverse side with whitish bands of stomata. We include in this section:
  • Picea omorica (spruce Omorika - Omorika)
  • Picea breweriana (California spruce)
  • Picea sitchensis (Sitkan spruce)
