Habitus

  • it is a taller shrub to lower tree up to 10 – 12 m high
  • trunk is irregular, crooked, crown is inverted-ovate, densely aligned
  • greenish-gray bark
  • the bork is grey to dark grey, deeply longitudinally fissured

Buds

  • they are erected in a spiral, sessile, ovate, short-pointed, pressed to a branch
  • floral ones are broadly ovate
  • the tip is diverted from the branch
  • covering scale is one, reddish-brown, glossy

Shoots

  • they are round, green to reddish-brown when young, grey-hairy, later grey to grey-brown, glabrous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • leaves are simple, broadly lanceolate, oblong-ovate to oval, 7 - 10 x 3 - 6 cm large
  • the widest are ± in the lower half
  • they are short-pointed at the end - the tip is twisted, broadly wedge-shaped at the base, serrated along the edge
  • they are dark green ,glossy on the top, grey-tomentose on the reverse side
  • the vein is pressed in from the top, protruding from the bottom
  • peduncle is 1 - 2 cm long
  • the leaves are very variable in shape and signs !

Flowers

  • it is a  dioecious tree species
  • flowers are catkins
  • it blooms in  III - IV, before leaf development

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a capsule
  • the seed is a fluffy achene, it ripens in IV – V

Extension

  • extensive Eurasian range
  • it is common in Slovakia from lowlands up to 1,200 (1,450 m above the sea level)

Ecology

  • this woody plant is distinctly light-loving, undemanding to the soil
  • it tolerates increased moisture, but also a relative lack of water in the soil and extreme temperature fluctuations
  • it is an important pioneering tree species, as one of the first to inhabit clearings, potholes, loose and devastated areas and forest edges

Significance

  • it is fast-growing, pioneering, preparatory and ameliorative tree
  • scaly tree
  • it is a decorative woody plant at the time of flowering with abundant flowers
  • its mourning form is used
