Habitus

  • it is a low dwarf bush
  • its branches and stems are recumbent, rooting
  • it forms dense clumps

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • leaves are simple, oblong to broadly ovate, glabrous, 12–50 x 0.5–1.5 mm in size
  • they are wedge-shaped at the base, weakly serrated in the lower half, marginal at the
  • apex, obtuse to shallowly cut out at the end
  • equally green ± shiny on both sides
  • venation indistinct, lateral veins arched

Flowers

  • it is dioecious tree species
  • its flowers are catkins
  • it blooms in VI - VIII, simultaneously with the development of leaves

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a capsule
  • the seed is a  fluffy achene

Extension

  • it is originally widespread in Central and South-Eastern Europe in high
  • mountains, especially in the Alps, Carpathians, more rarely in the Apennines and in the north of the Balkan Peninsula
  • in Slovakia, it grows mainly in the Low, Western, Belianske and High Tatras, in Malá Fatra and Babia Hora
  • it inhabits mainly subalpine and alpine forests and paved rubble just above the mountain pine zone at altitudes of 1,800 - 2,300 m above the sea level
  • it is most often found near springs and lakes

Ecology

  • it grows on acidic, shallow and stony soils

Significance

  • willow is an important pioneer, soil protection and amelioration tree species of alpine areas
  • in orchard growing, it is mainly used as a rock garden
  • it is protected by law, endangered species (EN)
