Habitus

  • low creeping bush up to 5 - 20 cm with rooting branches and shoots

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • simple, petiolate, round to inverted ovate, 20 - 40 x 15 - 35 mm large, whole marginal, leathery
  • the stalk is 10 -20 mm long
  • rounded to cut out at the top, rounded at the base
  • dark green on the upper side, wrinkled with distinctly imprinted veining (reticulated), glossy
  • underside is greyish-green, densely tomentose, veining protruding (reticulated)

Flowers

  • it is dioecious tree species
  • it blooms in VI - VIII simultaneously with the development of leaves

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is an ovoid, gray-tomentose capsule

Extension

  • it is originally widespread in the cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere in the mountains of Europe
  • in Slovakia, it grows on carbonate substrates in alpine locations from 890 to 2,300 m above the sea level (subalpine to alpine zone)

Ecology

  • it is ecologically tied to limestone soils
  • stone alpine meadows and slopes, snow deposits of high mountain positions, limestone stony soils
  • it can also occur on other mineral substrates, as long as they are sufficiently nutritious

Significance

  • it is one of our most beautiful tree species (and certainly the most beautiful from willow family)
  • suitable and in demand as a rock garden
  • protected by law !
  • vulnerable species (VU)
