Habitus

  • tree 30 - 40 m high, conical crown
  • branches grow in regular whorls – they are almost horizontally distributed
  • bark light brown
  • grey bork, forming irregular round plates

Buds

  • buds are broadly conical, yellow-brown without resin

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • assimilation organs are needle-like
  • needles are 15 - 30 x 1.5 mm large, distinctly square, sharp terminal, firm, sickle-shaped
  • they stand out around the entire twig, can be variously colored (green, blue, silvery whitish, honeydew)

Flowers

  • it is monoecious wood, with flowers of different sexes
  • ♂ cones are oblong-ovoid, 2.0 - 2.5 cm large, first red-purple, later yellowish-purple
  • ♀ cones are broadly ovoid, 4.0-5.0 cm in size, crimson-red to pinkish-green, initially upright

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a cone, 8-12 x 10-15 cm large, oblong-cylindrical , light brown, resinous
  • seed scales are folded, irregularly toothed at the end, thin, flexible
  • ripens in September of the first year
  • the seed is ovoid, 3 - 4 mm in size, brown, spoon-shaped, placed on a 10 - 12 mm long membranous wing

Extension

  • North American continent – ​​Rocky hills at altitudes from 1,500 – 3,300 m above the sea level.
  • it grows singly or in groups
  • on the territory of Slovakia it is found only as a cultivated species

Ecology

  • semi-shade to sunny woody plant
  • in Slovak conditions completely frost-resistant
  • undemanding to the soil, it  tolerates drought and exhalates

Significance

  • in ornamental horticulture, especially its colorful forms and shapes
  • with regard to resistance to immissions, it can be used for planting in urban environments
  • when creating urban greenery
  • as a Christmas tree
  • the public often uses the wrong term to describe the prickly spruce - "silver fir"
