Habitus

  • tree in the homeland growing to a height of 10 - 15 m
  • crown broadly conical, densely branched
  • bark smooth, light brown with prominent resin vesicles

Buds

  • buds are spherical, brown, resinous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • assimilation organs needle-shaped, 10 - 20 x 2 - 2.5 mm large, widening towards the top, at the end they are mostly cut out
  • on top they are dark green, shiny in the middle with a distinct groove
  • on the underside with two prominent chalk-white bands of vents, which often merge into one integral white area

Flowers

  • wood monoecious, flowers of different sexes
  • ♂ - cones are cylindrical, yellowish, grow at the base needles on the underside of last year's branches
  • ♀ - cones are cylindrical, upright, ¨grow on the upper side of last year's branches

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a cone, cylindrical, 4 - 7 x 2.5 - 3 cm in size with protruding supporting scales
  • after ripening the cones on the trees gradually disintegrate and only the central spindle remains

Extension

  • mountainous areas of the southern part of the Korean peninsula at an altitude of 1,000 - 1,800 m above sea level

Significance

  • a valuable decorative tree with a habit, needles (distinct chalky white drawing on the underside) and cones
  • in the territory of Slovakia it is only found as a cultivated species
