  • assimilation organs (leaves) are opposite, or in whorls (rarely alternate), sometimes dichotomous:
    • on young plants long, needle-like
    • later small, scale-like
  • ♂ flowers with numerous stamens
  • ♀ flowers with few seed scales , which become woody or thicken after ripening (common juniper)
  • the family includes about 18 genera with more than 120 species that grow all over the Earth
  • In Slovakia, this family is represented by only one genus - juniper (Juniperus).
